30 Days of Truth-Days 17-18

Day 17-A book you've read that changed your views on something.

This one made me think because most books I read are mystery or crime related. The first book that came to mind though was my favorite book-My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. This book really makes you think on medical ethics. The book is about a young girl with leukemia. Her parents decide to have another child genetically altered to make sure that she would be a compatible donor for her older sister. She goes through countless surgerys and blood draws to help her sister. At one point she has enough and finds a lawyer who helps her try for legal emancipation for her body from her parents since she is a minor.

It really makes you think because at what point is enough enough? Most people would do anything to save their child but to me in this situation when you know she isn't going to live much longer anyway, why torture your other children to put it off and make them both suffer? Also, is it really ethical to have a child just to save another for a short time? I don't think I would ever have the heart for this.

I won't spoil the end of the book for anyone who hasn't read it but it is a very good read. It makes you really think on different situations. I will warn you it is hard to read if you are very emotional though!
